Who is singing aria “Vissi D’Arte” (Tosca) being talked about in TV show: Frasier, episode “First Date”? 5:20

Scene 2 – Niles’ apartment. There is a small, intimate dinner table set for two. Daphne has lit candles all over the apartment. An opera is playing on the stereo. Niles (in his blue blazer) comes down the stairs, stunned at what she has done to the place.

Daphne: Oh, don’t you look handsome.

Niles: Thank you. Daphne, this place looks wonderful. And excellent choice of music, I love this aria!

Daphne: Yes, she has a gorgeous voice, doesn’t she? It’s a pity she never got quite the recognition of a Joan Sutherland or a Renata Tebaldi.

Niles: [surprised at the depth of her comment] I had no idea you knew so much about sopranos.

Daphne: Yeah, well, you don’t live with your brother for five years and not learn a thing or two about divas.

I don’t know who the performenr is, but here is some information for the other readers:

The aria is from Act II of “Tosca” by Puccini.
The title heroine is locked up in a room with the police chief.
She wants her boyfriend’s life spared from the firing squad, but the police chief agrees only in exchange for her sexual services.
The police chief writes the document at a table where he had just enjoyed a steak dinner.
Meanwhile, Tosca sings this aria, asking God why he is rewarding her so meagerly after living such a good life.

When the time comes for the exchange, she notices the carving knife, gets an idea, and stabs the police chief to death.

In some posters advertising performances of the opera, the initial letter in “Tosca” is made into a carving knife.

I hope Daphne doesn’t stab Niles.

Easier to say who isn’t (Maria Callas). Also Tebaldi and Sutherland are good candidates to not being (the observation would be senseless). She’s probably One of The Many (the tiny part of the aria doesn’t allow for evaluation). If you put a gun under my nose, I’d say Raina Kabaivanska, but more likely One of The (too) Many, alas.
