Current suit guidelines/standards?

I start a job soon which requires me to wear a suit and look professional. I am 20, and I am doing starting a year in industry so I’m pretty unexposed to the “real” world.

I don’t want to turn up looking out the picture, so wondered what the suit guidelines are? E.g. there’s a lot of two and three buttoned suits, pin-stripes I have heard aren’t fashionable and will achieve a more “gangster” look which isn’t desired!

   pin stripe suits

   A standard two-button suit coat will work just fine. If sport coats are acceptable, I’d recommend them since your clothing budget will go farther and they can be much smarter-looking if paired with the right pants and shirts.
